A debt management plan is an informal agreement to pay your debts in affordable monthly amounts. Specifically, you make one payment each month, and subsequently, we share it between your creditors. However, it isn’t legally binding, and consequently, your creditors don’t have to agree to it.

How a debt management plan works

1  Check what you can afford: We look at your income, spending and debts, so we can work out how much you can pay each month.

2  We contact your creditors: We ask them to freeze interest and charges and to accept smaller monthly payments. They don’t have to agree, and we’ll tell you what they say.

3  You make one payment a month: You pay us, we take our fee, and we share the rest between your creditors, as set out in your payment plan.

What a debt management plan can do

  • Replace several payments with one.
  • Set a monthly amount based on what you can afford after your essential costs.
  • Lead to creditors freezing interest and charges. Some creditors may agree. Others won’t.
  • Be changed if your circumstances change. Tell us and we’ll review your plan.

What it can't do

  • It isn’t legally binding on you or on your creditors. A creditor could still refuse, keep adding interest, or start court action.
  • It doesn’t write off your debt. You repay what you owe, and a plan can last for years. [give a realistic range, or “we’ll show you how long yours is likely to take”]
  • It usually shows on your credit file and can make it harder to borrow.
  • It doesn’t deal with priority debts, such as mortgage or rent arrears. See below.
  • It costs money. See “What a debt management plan costs”.

Who a DMP may suit

A debt management plan may suit you if:

  • You owe money on things like credit cards, store cards, personal loans, overdrafts, catalogue accounts or payday loans.
  • You have a regular income you can use to make payments.
  • You can afford at least something each month after your essential costs.

When it may not suit you

A plan may not be right if you can’t afford any payment, if your debts are more than you could repay in a reasonable time, or if you need legal protection from creditors. Other options may suit you better:

  • Breathing Space (Debt Respite Scheme): up to 60 days when most creditors must stop charging interest and chasing you.
  • Debt relief order (DRO): for people on a low income with few assets and little debt.
  • Individual voluntary arrangement (IVA): a formal agreement run by a licensed insolvency practitioner.
  • Bankruptcy: a court process that can write off debts but has serious consequences for your assets and credit file.
  •

Priority Debts

You should pay some debts first

Some debts are called priority debts because not paying them has more serious consequences. They include mortgage and rent arrears, council tax arrears, gas and electricity, court fines, child maintenance and tax debts to HMRC. Missing these can lead to losing your home, court action or being disconnected.

These are usually dealt with first and aren’t normally part of a debt management plan. We’ll talk through them with you.

Which debts can be included

Debts a plan usually covers

FCA regulated

  • Credit cards and store cards
  • Personal loans
  • Bank overdrafts
  • Payday loans
  • Catalogue accounts

Other debts we can also help with

We can also assist with certain debts that are not ordinarily included in a conventional personal Debt Management Plan, including:

  • HMRC self-assessment and other tax arrears
  • Sole trader business and tax debt
  • Utility bill arrears
  • County Court Judgment (CCJ) debts

These debts may need to be addressed separately, depending on the nature of the liability and your individual circumstances. For example, HMRC tax arrears may be addressed through a Time to Pay arrangement.

We believe in a distinctive way of managing money.
